Maria Xanthopoulou, Assistant Professor
Maria Xanthopoulou is a field archaeologist specializing in the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. She studied Art History (BA, 1988-92) and Byzantine Archaeology (MA, 1992-3; PhD, 1993-7) at Université Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne. She has worked as an archaeologist for the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (2005) and has taught Byzantine Archaeology at Université Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne (1998-9), Université de Fribourg (2005), the University of Crete (2007-8), and the University of the Peloponnese (since 2007). She has excavated in Crete (Eleutherna, Itanos), Philippi, Rhodes, and Lattes (France). Her research interests focus on Byzantine minor arts (pottery, metallurgy), the archaeology of everyday life, and Late Roman and Byzantine Crete. Her proposal for an underwater geoarchaeological research project in Crete was awarded a National Geographic Society / Waitt Grants Program Award in 2012.
