Kalamata!

The second-largest city of the Peloponnese, Kalamata is situated at the centre of the Messinian Bay and at the foot of the imposing Mount Tayghetos. Kalamata stands out for its Mediterranean climate, beautiful landscape and close proximity to significant archaeological and tourism centres, such as Ancient Messene and Pylos. 

Kalamata is a remarkably cultural, vibrant and gastronomic city. About 10% of the city’s population (80,000) are students registered at the two higher educational institutions placed at the city: the University of the Peloponnese and the Technical Educational Institute of the Peloponnese. The city offers a variety of cultural and sports activities, as well as nightlife options. Kalamata is also known as the national capital of modern dance, hosting annually the International Dance Festival. 

Getting here

Kalamata is linked to Athens and other major Greek cities with an excellent and frequent service of buses. Students enjoy a discounted fare. Information and timetables at: http://www.ktelmessinias.gr

Moreover, Kalamata’s airport provides links to Greek cities. Between May and October, there also frequent flights to all major European cities.

Getting around

Kalamata’s considerable pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure makes walking and cycling the best ways of getting around. Local Buses run frequently between the city centre and the sea front at a 1 Euro fare. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks or inside the bus.

Food service on campus

Throughout the year, the student restaurant provides three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), including weekends, at 2 Euros per meal. 

Accommodation

There are no student flats in Kalamata, but the Erasmus+ Office in cooperation with the Department organize hotel arrangements for exchange visitors at discounted prices.

Moreover, a wide variety of economical private accommodation is available. Sharing flats is not customary in Greece. The average price for a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment ranges between 200-250 euros per month. The above cost includes rent, as well as electricity, water and heating.
